Life Lessons from Football

Raising little ones takes constant awareness, "audibles" and checks to be sure we are covering what we are wanting to do when giving our young sons the best possible childhood.  We're trying to balance the stresses of winning, losing, competition and limited time with their daddy, who is busy on the football field.  We are not alone...moms and dads are dealing with this no matter the profession.  This summer, we discovered a great "game plan" for family life.  I write about it in football terms and present it to Gameday Style readers because it uses our favorite game to teach family values.  Head on over to subscribe.
It has wonderful resources for dads and moms!

All Pro Dad is Family First's innovative program helping men become better fathers. AllProDad.com is a one-stop resource where dads can find encouragement, ideas, information and videos.  The site contains hundreds of Articles and Top 10 Lists to help dads engage their children in fun and creative ways. Dads can also connect with one another through our FacebookTwitterLinkedIn and YouTube.
The Play of the Day is where fathers can go to get hard-hitting, concise, helpful and free information on how to be a better dad. The Play of the Day daily email goes out to 70,000 fathers each day and it’s the most read daily fatherhood e-mail in the world. You can subscribe via email or check out All Pro Dad’s Blog for the latest post.
All Pro Dad's Days are a little breakfast, a little bonding and a lot of fun!  Dads gather monthly, with their children and other dads, at their child's school cafeteria to discuss topics relevant to school age children and to take part in fun bonding activities and games.  Dads leave with practical parenting tips they can take home and put to use immediately.  All Pro Dad’s Days are in over 1,000 schools nationwide and partnered with the National PTA.
Our NFL Father & Kid Experiences are three-hour events held at a team’s practice facility or stadium. The events provide an opportunity for dads to spend time with their children by participating in interactive games designed to strengthen their relationship.
All Pro Dad’s 53 NFL spokesmen are a group of coaches, players and alumni, including Tony Dungy, Tony Boselli, Kyle Brady and Mike Tomlin, who exemplify passion, discipline, work ethic, commitment and loyalty both on the field and in their role as a father.
In addition to All Pro Dad, Family First offers iMOM for mothers in every stage of parenting as well as the Family Minute with Mark Merrill, which provides encouragement for all families.  Watch the videos below to learn more about Family First's programs and the real stories of lives that have been changed as a result of the solutions that we offer.

Caramel Cupcakes

Caramel Cupcakes will catch anyone's attention, but what's really eye-catching is how easily these sweeties can travel. An easy-traveler is a good recipe candidate for your tailgate.

Caramel glaze vs. Caramel (fluffy) frosting

The glaze style icing takes a tailgate victory over any kind of fluffy icing that gets all bunched up on the way to the parking lot.  Here is the recipe from

Caramel Cupcakes
(Vanilla Buttermilk Cake with Caramel Icing)
Cake recipe adapted from Sky High
Make sure the cupcakes are completely cooled, cold even, before icing them. If they are the slightest bit warm, they will tear when you turn them over to dip them in the hot icing. If the icing begins to harden while you are working with it, just set it over a medium flame and stir it for 30 seconds or so until it loosens up again.
Makes about 18 iced cupcakes

Bacon+Club Crackers+Parmesan=SCORE!

A Gameday Style reader, Tricia, recently presented a question..

"what is a good tailgating recipe I can make with bacon?"

Right away, I thought of the classic bacon and club cracker appetizer, of which The Pioneer Woman has perfected in "Holiday Bacon Appetizers".   I think it helped Tricia, a busy mama of 4, that the recipe has only 3 delicious ingredients.
Bacon.  Club Crackers.  Parmesan.

Tricia went about her business, preparing these beauties for her tailgate celebrating the Missouri Tigers, and taking some great photos of her project.

club crackers

parmesan

bacon
This is probably not nearly enough for your tailgate.
I would guess 25 pans would do the trick. haha
Tricia said hers were gone in a flash.

Tricia's kitchen smelled divine right about now.

Here is the recipe...I think we can change the name to Tailgate Bacon Appetizers.

Holiday Tailgate Bacon Appetizers

Ingredients

  • 1 package Club Crackers
  • 1 pound Thin Sliced Bacon (or More Depending On Number Of Crackers)
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • Optional Alternative: Brown Sugar Instead Of Parmesan Cheese

Instructions

Lay crackers (as many as you want) face up on a cookie sheet.
Scoop about 1 teaspoon of grated Parmesan cheese onto each cracker. Cut your package of bacon in half (or cut pieces individually) and carefully, so the cheese doesn’t fall off, wrap each cheese covered cracker in one half piece of bacon, completely covering the cracker. It should fit snugly around the cracker.
Place the bacon wrapped crackers onto a baking sheet that has a rack on it.
Place in a 250-degree oven for about 2 hours.

Gameday Colors

Having gameday style means incorporating lots of pieces in your team colors into your wardrobe.  I have always found myself stocking up in seasons where my colors were plentiful in the trends.  If you want to stay ahead of the game on what colors are in, and knowing whether your own team colors happen to be popular for that season, just Google the term "Pantone Fall Trends".

It's like the Pre-season Top 10 when determining what team colors are on-trend for the season.  Don't feel sartorially challenged if your favorites aren't represented... your own school or team colors are always a classic on gameday.  If your colors happen to appear on the Pantone color chart, it means they will be all over the shops and stores and you better get in gear and stock yourself up.
